2015 Wireless Independence Now! Workshop Presentations Available Online

Throughout the summer of 2015, the AT&T Corporate Accessibility Technology Office and the Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center for Wireless Technologies (Wireless RERC) conducted workshops for people with disabilities, caregivers, and professionals on how to use accessibility features found on smartphones and tablets. Workshops focused on accessibility features helpful for people who use hearing aids, people who use text and video services, people who have communication difficulties, people who have difficulty seeing, people with cognitive disabilities, or sensory disabilities, people with dexterity or mobile disabilities, caregivers and other professionals who assist people with disabilities. The presentations (links below) include the accessibility features found on smartphones, phablets and tablets that use Apple or Android operating systems (OS); accessibility resources for services, devices and mobile applications; and ways to improve the accessibility of devices and services.

Wireless RERC researchers Ben Lippincott and John Morris will be presenting at the 30th Annual Technology & Persons with Disabilities Conference, also known as CSUN 2015. The conference will convene in San Diego, CA from March 2 to March 7, 2015. Attend the conference and be sure to visit the following Wireless RERC sessions:

Wireless Independence Now Workshop: AT&T and the Wireless RERC will conduct educational outreach sessions that will educate users with disabilities about accessibility features found on wireless devices.

Use of Mainstream Wireless Technology by Adults who Use AAC: This lecture will present findings of a study of access to and use of mainstream wireless technology by adults who use specialized Speech Generating Devices.

EyeRemember App on Google Glass for People with Acquired Brain Injury: Presentation of results from development and testing of Google Glass app that reminds users with acquired brain injury of important information regarding friends and family.

June 2014 – Federal Communications Commissioner, Tom Wheeler, presented the 3^rd Annual Awards for Advancement in Accessibility (Chairman’s AAA) at the 2014 M-Enabling Summit in Arlington, Virginia. These are honorary awards given to innovators that develop communication technologies for people with disabilities. The Chairman’s AAA falls under the FCC’s Accessibility and Innovation Initiative and is awarded to both the private and public sector. The awards were chosen out of the following seven categories: Employment Opportunities, Closed Captions, Mobile Web Browsers, Advanced Communication Services (ACS), Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities, Social Media and Video Description. Chairman Wheeler stated, ““The potential of broadband-enabled technology to improve the lives of Americans living with disabilities is almost limitless -- but only if that technology is accessible. I’m glad that these awards can help spark the development of new and creative technologies that furthers the important goal of making communications accessible for all Americans.” For a complete list of winner, please click the link below.

AT&T's Corporate Accessibility Technology Office: An Industry Model

October 2013 — The Global Initiative for Inclusive Information and Communication Technologies (G3ict) released a report highlighting the Corporate Accessibility Technology Office (CATO) at AT&T. The report notes that although CATO was established in 2012, this is only the most recent effort by AT&T to ensure accessibility for both employees and consumers. As an office, CATO works to ensure that products comply with accessibility regulations while also raising awareness and providing training concerning disability-related issues and performing outreach to members of the disability community. The report also highlights CATO’s prospective projects including company-wide accessibility standards, additional employee trainings concerning accessibility-related issues, and collaborations with equipment manufacturers to both educate manufacturers and “advocate for incorporating accessibility technology into mobile product design.”

June 2013 — Wireless RERC principal investigator, Dr. Helena Mitchell, presented 9-1-1 & Alert Trends for People with Disabilities at the National Emergency Number Associations’ (NENA) annual conference in Charlotte, North Carolina. NENA’s educational tracks, among other things, addressed NG911, accessibility, text-to-911, public outreach, and Geographical Information Systems (GIS). NENA hosted thousands of public safety professionals, telecommunications specialists, and federal, state, and local policymakers for a week of discussions, presentations and demonstrations aimed at developing an understanding the near and long-term issues facing public safety and the skills needed to address challenges.

Alerting the Whole Community: Removing Barriers to Alerting Accessibility

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) released Alerting the Whole Community: Removing Barriers to Alerting Accessibility, a report outlining the current efforts made to ensure accessibility for people with access and functional needs within the Integrated Public Alert and Warning System (IPAWS). According to the report, approximately 25% of Americans may need “assistance or accommodation to receive emergency alerts,” including people with disabilities and limited English proficiency. The report highlights that IPAWS works to increase accessibility of alerts for all individuals through multi-modal and geo-targeted dissemination while implementing standards that “developers of accessibility products and services can modify their products and services so end-users will receive alerts issued through the IPAWS system.” Noted challenges to ensuring accessible alerts and warnings, as noted by the report, include educating the public as to the importance and capabilities of IPAWS, and adoption of IPAWS within all communities. Galain Solutions notes that despite the challenges, “FEMA’s Integrated Public Alert and Warning System (IPAWS) is moving quickly toward their goal of making sure alerts and warnings are fully accessible by the whole community.”

Implementing UAAG 2.0

June 7, 2013 — W3C published an updated version of the recently released working draft Implementing User Agent Accessibility Guidelines (UAAG) 2.0. The draft provides guidance for designing accessible user agents, which include “web browsers and other types of software that retrieve and render web content.” The updated version of the draft now includes mobile accessibility examples to demonstrate how “web browsers that follow UAAG benefit people with disabilities.” Some examples include individuals who may need to use alternative content for images to prevent excessive scrolling or need to set closed captioning as the default for all videos. W3C is seeking comment on the draft, specifically concerning accessibility guidelines for mobile web applications, the clarity of guidelines, whether only certain guidelines must be met for development of user agents for specific platforms, and the availability of “sufficient examples of other technologies that support accessibility.” Comments on the draft are due by June 21, 2013 to public-uaag2-comments@w3.org.
