App Factory Releases 2014-2015 Call for Proposals

Each year, the Wireless RERC’s App Factory invites experienced organizations or individual developers based in the U.S. to submit proposals for financial support to develop assistive and/or accessibility apps for mobile platforms (e.g., Android, Blackberry 10, iOS, Windows Phone).

Apps developed through this program include AccessNote by the American Foundation for the Blind, BrailleTouch by BrailleTech, LLC, and Sprint ID Accessibility Packs, Currency Identifier, and IDEAL Group Reader by Apps4Android.

Proposals for 2014-15 are due on June 30, 2014. Selection of proposals for funding will be on October 15. More information can be found in the PDF of the Call for Proposals below.

Funding Announcement

The National Council on Disability (NCD) released a notice of funding for a cooperative agreement. Applicants are given the opportunity to propose methods for determining the impact of increasing employment opportunities for people with disabilities. The project seeks to examine the implementation and projected effectiveness of the amended Section 503 regulations that became effective in March 2014. Among other things, the resultant report is expected to develop recommendations for improving employee self-disclosure rates and discuss the Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs’s role in improving contractor compliance. The award amount is $100,000 and proposals are due May 31, 2016.

Brief Disability Survey

September 2015 - Academic researchers from North Carolina A&T State University and Baruch College (CUNY) are working with RecruitMilitary to understand how individuals label their disability. This brief (3-5 minute) survey is a small part of a larger study that explores veteran's experiences in civilian employment after a military career.

Your completion of this survey and subsequent surveys will assist us in identifying areas of improvement for Veteran support organizations and employers.

American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD)

June 2015 - The American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD) is currently seeking a new President and CEO to advance attainment of the organization’s vision, “to develop the inherent power of people with disabilities to be both a political and economic force.” While they are looking for a new leader, the AAPD Board of Directors is temporarily relying on long-time disability rights advocate and former Executive Vice President, Helena Berger, as the Acting President and CEO of the organization. As the AAPD approaches their 25th anniversary, they are seeking feedback to take the organization to the next level. You can email them at communications@aapd.com with your questions or comments. As well as improving the organization, the AAPD is hosting A Celebration of Pride, Power, and Promise on July 27th in Washington, D.C. with their partner, the National Disability Leadership Alliance (NDLA). Register today for the DRC Annual Meeting, a two-day conference where the latest research findings on the future of disability policies will be highlighted. Representative from federal agencies will provide insight on directing programs for people with disabilities. The dates of this conference are August 5-6, 2015. The time is 8am-4:30pm at the National Press Club on 529 14th Street, NW, 13th Floor in Washington, DC. This conference is free and registration closes on July 23^rd.

President Obama’s Remarks

Champions of Change: Disability Employment Champions Of Change

October 2014 – In recognition of National Disability Employment Awareness Month, the Obama Administration honored 10 Champions of Change recipients for their dedication to the employment of individuals with disabilities. Earlier this month in a Presidential Proclamation, President Obama pledged to combat employment discrimination and recognize those who demonstrate a commitment to diversity and accessibility in the American workforce. The areas of influence for each honoree are broad, ranging from entrepreneurship to workplace accessibility.

Among the Champions of Change honorees in the technology field, Microsoft Senior Director Jenny Lay-Flurrie is one of the leaders of the company’s Trusted Experiences Team (TExT). TExT focuses on accessibility, privacy, and online safety.

Another recipient is Tim Springer, Founder and CEO of SSB BART Group. SSB Bart Group has provided digital accessibility compliance solutions for industry, government, and educational institutions. Under Tim’s leadership, the company has taken a directive to ensure digital technology complies with regulatory standards, also empowering individuals with disabilities.

US Labor Department's Office of Disability Employment Policy announces launch of Web Portal on accessible Workplace Technology

October 2014 – The U.S. Department of Labor's Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP) announced the launch of the PEAT Works web portal earlier this month, a website that connects employees, employers, and technology providers with accessible tools and resources for the workplace. Organized by ODEP's Partnership on Employment & Accessible Technology (PEAT), PEATworks.org includes educational articles and interactive tools to assist businesses and technology providers when adopting accessible technologies for employees. The website aims to “improve the employment, retention and career advancement of people with disabilities” by promoting accessible technology and facilitating resources that assist with workplace development.

Kathy Martinez, Assistant Secretary of Labor for Disability Employment Policy, states, "PEAT is the only entity of its kind bringing together employers, technology providers, thought leaders and technology users around the topic of accessible technology and employment."
