The Disability Statistics and Demographics Rehabilitation and Research Training Center (StatsRRTC) announced it will hold the 2014 Annual Compendium of Disability Statistics and Research-to-Policy Roundtable in December. The events will present the latest findings and challenges facing people with disabilities, as well as provide researchers, advocates, and policymakers the opportunity to discuss how evidence-based decision making in service and policy arenas can benefit people with disabilities.

Both events will be held on Wednesday, December 3rd, 2014 in Washington, D.C. The location and venue has not been confirmed, and will available to registrants via email. A live webcast will also be provided. For additional information including registration, please click the link below.

2013 Compendium on Disability Statistics

December 2013 — The American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD) announced the release of the 2013 Compendium of Disability Statistics, a web-based tool that pools disability statistics published by various federal agencies. The Compendium is meant to serve as a tool for researchers and policy makers by providing accessible data to help support “decisions related to policy improvements, program administration, service delivery, protection of civil rights and major life activities.” Findings from the 2013 Compendium highlight that the employment gap between people with and without disabilities remains, with 32.7 percent of people with disabilities employed in 2012 as compared to 73.6 percent of people without disabilities. Also noted is the employment gap by education, wherein, “28.4 percent of people with disabilities with a Bachelor’s degree or higher are employed compared to 76.1 percent of people without disabilities.” President and CEO of AAPD, Mark Perriello, noted that “the findings contained in the 2013 Compendium on Disability Statistics shine a light onto the unfinished work that must be done to improve outcomes of Americans with disabilities. Despite recent gains from the federal government to the private sector to increase economic opportunities, Americans with disabilities remain unemployed and outside the work force at alarming rates. Business, government, and community organizations must work together to build outcome oriented solutions at the local, state, and national level.”

2013 Compendium Briefing and Research-to-Policy Roundtable

The release of the 2013 Compendium of Disability Statistics and the Third Annual Research-to-Policy Roundtable will take place on December 11, 2013 in Washington, D.C. The Compendium is a web-based tool used to “pool disability statistics.” The release of the Compendium will be followed by a “one-hour workshop on the sources and uses of disability statistics” and the Research-to-Policy Roundtable, where researchers and disability advocates will be able to discuss ways that research can influence policy and programs affecting people with disabilities. Registration for the event will open this month.

NIDRR Award Application - Community Living and Participation for People with Psychiatric Disabilities

May 20, 2013 — The National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR) has issued a notices of final priorities [FR Doc No: 2013-11978 and 2013-11988] and applications for new awards [FR Doc No: 2013-11977 and 2013-11987] for Rehabilitation Research Training Centers (RRTC) on Disability Statistics and Community Living and Participation for People with Psychiatric Disabilities. The final priorities note that the RRTC on Disability Statistics should aim to provide and improve access to disability data and statistics “relevant to improving the lives of people with disabilities.” The Community Living and Participation RRTC should conduct research on factors such as technology, interventions, practices and policies which contribute to improved community living and participation for people with psychiatric disabilities. Estimated amount available for either award is $875,000, and applications are due July 19, 2013.

Webinar: Findings from the 2011 Disability Status Report

On Friday, January 18, 2013, Cornell University’s Employment and Disability Institute (EDI) will present the findings from the 2011 Disability Status Report via a free online webinar from 2:00-3:00pm EST. The presentation will focus on data collected from the 2011 American Community Survey (ACS), as it relates to individuals with disabilities and employment, education, poverty, household income and labor earnings. Some findings from Cornell’s research up for discussion include the disparity between employment of working age (21-64) people with disabilities (33.4%) and their non-disabled cohorts (76.5%). Individuals can register to gain access to this free webinar.

04.13.12 – “Digital Differences,” a report examining the demographics of those who have and those who lack Internet access, was released by the Pew Research Center. The report highlights that 78% of Americans ages 18 and older use the Internet and 65% of adults have home broadband access. Those who do not use the Internet or have home broadband access are more likely to be over the age of 65, earn less than $30,000 a year, and have less than a high school education. Those who were found not to be Internet users also stated that their lack of access was either due to a disinterest in the Internet, a lack of a computer, or the high cost of the Internet. The report also highlights that having a disability plays a role in Internet use, with 54% of adults with disabilities using the Internet compared to 81% of adults without a disability and 41% of adults with disabilities having home broadband access compared to 69% of adults without disabilities. In terms of mobile devices, the report stated that 63% of adults use mobile devices to go online wirelessly. In addition, the report states that Smartphone ownership is now more prevalent than basic mobile phones with 46% of adults owning a Smartphone compared to 41% of adults who owned a basic cellphone. New Unemployment Rates

04.06.2012 – The Bureau of Labor Statistics has released new statistics highlighting the employment status for people with disabilities. The statistics show that the unemployment rate for people with disabilities was 15.2% for March of 2012 and has varied only slightly from March of 2011 when the rate was 15.6%. The report also shows that the current unemployment rate for people with disabilities is almost double the rate for people without disabilities (8.1%). Men ages 16 to 64 with disabilities have an unemployment rate of 17.5% compared to 8.8% for men without disabilities, while women ages 16 to 64 with disabilities had an unemployment rate of 16.1% compared to 7.5% for women without disabilities.
