The National Institute for Disability Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR) awarded the Wireless RERC to a team from The Shepherd Center and Georgia Tech, where the RERC is headquartered.

Shepherd Center

The Shepherd Center is the premier provider in the southeastern U.S. of medical rehabilitation and community re-entry services for individuals who experience catastrophic disabilities. The Shepherd Center includes the largest freestanding specialty hospital in the U.S., with programs in spinal cord injury, brain injury, MS, ALS, spina bifida, post-polio syndrome and other neuromuscular diseases. Shepherd Center also offers comprehensive outpatient rehabilitation and specialty clinics (for example, skin care, urology and fertility, pain management, assistive technology, driving rehabilitation, seating and mobility, vocational services, benefits counseling and advocacy and health and wellness services) and supported community living for people with severe disabilities. Shepherd Center contributes expertise in disability and rehabilitation research and services. Shepherd also brings access to a large population of consumer collaborators for RERC research and development activities.

The Georgia Institute of Technology

The Georgia Institute of Technology (or Georgia Tech) is a leading national institution for higher education and advanced research in engineering and science. Researchers from a variety of departments at Georgia Tech bring expertise in technology, science, rehabilitation, and education to the Wireless RERC. Participants include the Center for Advanced Communication Policy, the Interactive Media Technology Center (IMTC), the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI), along with Georgia Tech’s College of Computing and School of Psychology.

Center for Advanced Communication Policy

CACP focuses on policy issues influencing cutting edge technologies through its programs and research initiatives such as the development of information and communications technology (ICT) policy, horizon scanning of significant public sector activities, and enhancement of Georgia 's contributions to the national and international policy research agenda. CACP collaborates with key stakeholders including industry leaders, leading research centers, legislative and regulatory bodies, and nonprofits to address a wide range of advanced communications agendas and related technology applications, particularly in the wireless and new technology arenas. These activities result in timely reports, advisories, published research filings before regulatory authorities. CACP clients include a wide range of stakeholders at the municipal, state, regional, national and international levels.
