FCC to Vote on Closed captioning of Online Video Clips

June 2014 –Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman, Tom Wheeler announced a tentative agenda for July’s Open Meeting. Reports to be considered by the Commission include: Modernizing E-Rate to Deliver Digital Learning, Connect America Fund Rural Broadband Experiments, and Closed Captioning of Internet Protocol-Delivered Video Clips. Regarding the latter, the FCC has planned a vote to determine if online video clips will be included in closed captioning mandates.  The meeting is scheduled for Friday, July 11, 2014 at 10:30a.m. EDT.

Accessibility on the FCC Open Meeting Agenda

January 2014 — The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) announced the agenda for an Open Meeting to be held on February 20, 2014. The agenda includes considerations for a Report and Order and Further Notice of Proposed Rulemaking to address the “quality and technical compliance of closed captioning on television programming.” Additionally, the Commission will consider a Third Notice of Proposed Rulemaking regarding the accuracy of caller location information provided for wireless 911 calls.  The meeting will begin at 10:30 a.m.

Senators Advocate for Closed Captioning in Online Video Clips

December 2013 — In response to a decision by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to reconsider the exemption of IP delivered video clips from captioning rules, Senators Mark Pryor (D-Ark) and Edward J. Markey (D-Mass) wrote a letter to the FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler to express their support in reconsideration of the matter.
